Con Artist uses Craigslist – Beware!

Scam ArtistI Must Confess…”

The following ad appeared on Craigslist:
“I must confess that I am very very new in this landlord business…However, my name is Thomas J. Dempsey, I own the house located @  Wellesley Cir in Mount Pleasant, SC. Due to my job as a missionary I spent less time in the states so I could not get a hold on any Realtor to handle this rent issue, although it was when I knew how long we are going to stay in Africa that I decided to rent out the house. However, the initial plan was to sale out the apt. which I tried, but sometimes the agent inflates the prize and it takes longer to sell. I am telling you this in case if you find the house on another website, that is the old advert. Because of this reason and more we need a responsible person (with good credit) that can take very good care of if as we are not after the money, but want it to be clean and for you to take it as if it were yours. Thomas J. Dempsey, Jr. – thomasjdempseyjrd2@gmail.com – +2348021169683

Con artist,Thomas Dempsey is using data from multiple listing services (mls) to post rental properties on Craigslist.com without the consent of the Realtors or homeowners. The Hunnicutt Real Estate Team’s listing on Wellesley was listed originally with the homeowners living there. As soon as they relocated, the Craigslist ad hit the internet and the calls came barrelling in. It was advertised for rent for $700/month, 3bd, 2ba in Park West – not hardly! That’s about half of market value, certainly too good to be true. Apparently, eight potential renters wired Mr. Dempsey their deposit money to a bank account in Nigeria. This appears to be one of many ads Dempsey had been running across the country.

In an article posted on PopDecay.com, special agent in charge, David A. Thomas, reports “this type of scam is becoming more prevalent nationwide…” The FBI has encouraged anyone with similar stories to report them to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
